Kitesurfing Lake Garda: the complete guide

The best kitespots on Lake Garda, from north to south.

Lake Garda, with an area of about 370 km², is the largest Italian lake. A magnificent landscape between Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige, it welcomes literally millions of tourists from all over the world, including many kitesurfing enthusiasts!

Thanks to its geographical location, Lake Garda sees alternating periodic winds due to a difference in atmospheric conditions between the lower lake and the upper lake, as a result of which winds are generated that in the morning (early) descend from the mountains to the plains and in the afternoon rise back up to the mountains.

We speak of the Pelèr and the Ora, the major thermal winds of Lake Garda, which blow from the north and south, respectively.

So, it's time to see which are the best spots for kitesurfing on Lake Garda! Let's start with the upper lake, where winds are generally less gusty than in the lower lake and therefore more suitable for beginners.

Wind Weather Lake Garda: how to see if it is windy?

Windy, WindGuru etc fail to predict thermal winds at Lake Garda. How then to go about it? If you do not have fellow kiters in the area, the site to consider is this. The wind diagram shows the baric difference between Bolzano and Brescia/Ghedi: the higher the baric difference, the stronger the wind on Lake Garda.Below is an example to understand how to read the graph.

Generally speaking, when the weather is good, the Pelèr blows in the morning from the north, and the Ora comes in from the south in the late morning or afternoon. Be careful, however: to kitesurf safely, you need to watch the sky, because a summer storm during the day can lead to a reversal of winds, which is often very violent and dangerous for beginners (and not)!
